Steinsdotter’s “Trollmor” Video Tells a Norwegian Lullaby Story Through Hand Shadows

April 14, 2026 (LONDON, UK) – Steinsdotter has released the official music video for “Trollmor,” a folk song rooted in her Norwegian heritage, featuring a hand shadow performance by internationally acclaimed hand shadow artist Drew Colby

Originally featured on Steinsdotter’s recent mixtape Twice Born, “Trollmor” reimagines a traditional Norwegian lullaby passed down through generations in her family. The song reflects childhood memories of being sung to sleep by her grandmother and mother, later becoming a lullaby she sang to younger siblings.

“Growing up in the countryside of Norway, you always hear about trolls in the woods or in the mountains. That is just part of the myth there,” she said. “I kind of love that in this song, a troll mother is having a warm, intimate moment putting her children to bed instead of being this scary creature everybody fears. It made me less scared of trolls and more fascinated by them.”

The video translates that perspective through the work of Drew Colby, whose hand shadow performance builds the world of the song in real time. Using only light, movement, and his hands, Colby shapes the figure of the troll mother and her children, turning the lullaby into a physical narrative.

Colby said he was immediately drawn to the project due to his own childhood fascination with trolls. “When I was a child, I loved trolls and made a whole family of trolls out of fabric,” he said. “I had a clear image of what the troll mother looks like and found her and the baby troll in my hands quite quickly, with the help of some tinsel and a feather.”

Colby’s career spans five continents and 36 countries, with television appearances including Not Going Out (BBC), Trust (BBC), 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), and Game of Talents (ITV). Additionally, he placed third for his skills on Germany’s Got Talent. In 2024, he broke the Guinness World Record for the largest projected shadow and received multiple awards, including the Phoenix Arts Club Cabaret Award and the Moving Parts Festival Audience Choice Award.

“Trollmor” Norwegian / English Lyric Translation:

Når Trollmor har lagt / When Trollmother has laid
Sine elve små troll / Her eleven little trolls down
Og bundet dem fast I halen / And tied them fast by the tail
Da synger hun sakte for /  Then she sings slowly to
Elleve små troll /  Eleven little trolls
De vakreste ord hun kjenner / The most beautiful words she knows
Oajajaja boff
Oajajaja boff
Oajajaja boff boff
Oajajaja boff

Norwegian lullabies frequently draw on the natural landscape and surrounding folklore, where mythic figures like trolls exist alongside everyday life rather than separate from it. In that context, “Trollmor” sits within a lineage of songs that soften the edges of these stories, reframing figures once used to instill fear into something intimate and familiar. Steinsdotter’s interpretation reflects that duality, where cultural myth and domestic memory coexist, and where a lullaby becomes both a personal inheritance and a way of re-seeing the stories that shaped childhood imagination.

The “Trollmor” music video is available on YouTube now.
