SJ Mortimer Enters a New Chapter With Debut Solo EP
LONDON, UK (August 26, 2026) — UK singer-songwriter SJ Mortimer will release a new five-song EP September 12 on physical formats, followed by an official digital release October 2. The project marks an exciting new chapter in Mortimer’s career as she steps further into her identity as a solo artist, leading to a full album release in 2027.
The EP brings together five songs that span different styles and perspectives in Mortimer’s songwriting. Two of the songs, “Late Bloomer” and “Don’t Underestimate Me,” have already been released, with the final single, “Numb,” out September 11. The additional songs, “Above & Beyond” and “Heals Me Like You,” complete the project as a first taste of Mortimer’s new mix of Americana, Roots, and Rock music.
The release follows Mortimer’s years as the lead vocalist of Morganway, the award-winning UK country-rock band with whom she has built an established career as a live performer and songwriter. While her work with the band remains an important part of her musical identity, the new EP represents Mortimer taking a deliberate step into a solo chapter she has been working toward for years. “It represents a new chapter to my musical journey – a step I've been tentative to take for so long but I’m finally ready for,” Mortimer said. “It’s an adventure and an exploration!” The project was developed through songwriting and recording sessions in Nashville, TN and Muscle Shoals, AL, bringing together Mortimer’s longstanding connection to Americana and Roots music with a broader exploration of her songwriting.
The EP’s first three singles establish several of its central themes. “Late Bloomer” is about trusting your own timing. “Don’t Underestimate Me” focuses on knowing your worth and refusing to shrink yourself, while “Numb” addresses owning your power. Together, the songs reflect Mortimer’s interest in writing directly about self-belief, resilience and the experience of finding your place.
The final two tracks add different dimensions to the project. “Above & Beyond” was written approximately a decade ago after Mortimer performed at a wedding where the groom described his bride as his “above and beyond.” Mortimer married her own husband, Kieran, that same year. Kieran, who is also a member of Morganway, has remained her guitarist both onstage and off. A decade after it was written, Mortimer brought the song into the Muscle Shoals recording process, infusing it with soul and groove. “Heals Me Like You” is another older song that Mortimer felt had finally found its place with this project. Featuring Nashville artist Zach Meadows on vocals, the song explores finding calm and connection with a loved one when the pressures of everyday life become overwhelming. Its more vulnerable subject matter provides a contrast to some of the EP’s more assertive material, beautifully wrapping up the project.
Rather than representing one fixed sound, Mortimer sees the five tracks as an introduction to the wider direction of her solo work. “The five songs all show a different style of music, so it’s like a teaser of the full album coming later,” Mortimer said. “All five songs have a slightly different message.”
For Mortimer, completing the project has been as significant personally as it is professionally. “I feel like I’ve achieved something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time and I’m proud of that, yet I’m eager for what’s next and never had so much drive to do more,” she said. “Every day is a battle of continuing through self doubt and keeping the integrity to keep pushing on.” That sense of persistence is central to the project’s intended audience. Mortimer made the EP for “late bloomers,” sensitive people and anyone who has felt lost, behind or held back by anxiety and self-doubt. She also hopes the songs resonate with women navigating the pressure to conform to expectations or make themselves smaller.
Her message to listeners is that there is no universal timeline for achieving personal or creative goals. “It’s never too late to do something you’ve always wanted to do,” Mortimer said. “Everyone’s timeline is different and it’s okay to take your own time with your life. Try to be kind to yourself and believe in yourself.”
The EP’s September 12 physical release will precede its October 2 digital release, marking the next stage of Mortimer’s transition from an established band vocalist and songwriter into a solo artist with a growing body of work of her own.
